Dangerous Rip Currents Expected Along Local Coasts Through Sunday Morning
Dangerous rip currents are expected along Matagorda, Brazoria, Galveston, and Bolivar beaches through Sunday morning, warns the National Weather Service.
Beachgoers are advised of dangerous rip currents expected along Gulf-facing beaches, including the Matagorda Peninsula, Brazoria County beaches, Galveston Island, and the Bolivar Peninsula. This Rip Current Statement, issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Houston/Galveston TX, is effective immediately, October 3 at 9:32 AM CDT, and will remain in effect until Sunday morning, October 4 at 9:00 AM CDT.
The NWS warns that rip currents can swiftly carry even experienced swimmers away from shore into deeper waters, posing a significant hazard.
To ensure safety, the NWS advises swimming only near a lifeguard and avoiding areas near rocks, jetties, and piers. If caught in a rip current, individuals should remain calm, float on their back, and avoid swimming against the current. If possible, swim parallel to the shoreline to escape the current. If unable to escape, face the shore, wave for help, and call out to attract attention.
