Coastal Flood Warning, Beach Hazards Statement Issued for San Diego, Orange Counties
Coastal Flood Warning, Beach Hazards Statement, and Coastal Flood Advisory issued by NWS San Diego for San Diego and Orange County Coastal Areas, warning of significant flooding, erosion, and hazardous surf conditions until Tuesday, October 13.
Residents in San Diego and Orange County Coastal Areas are advised to prepare for significant coastal flooding and hazardous surf conditions. The National Weather Service (NWS) San Diego has issued a Coastal Flood Warning, Beach Hazards Statement, and Coastal Flood Advisory, effective immediately.
The Coastal Flood Warning is in effect until 3 PM PDT Sunday, October 11, with significant coastal flooding and erosion possible. A Beach Hazards Statement is active from Sunday morning through Sunday evening, predicting surf of 5 to 7 feet with local sets up to 9 feet. Following these, a Coastal Flood Advisory will be in place from 3 PM Sunday to 2 PM PDT Tuesday, October 13, for minor coastal flooding.
The NWS warns that numerous roads and walking paths may close due to high water. Low-lying properties, including homes, businesses, and some critical infrastructure, may experience flooding. Shoreline erosion is expected during morning high tides. Increased surf will also lead to a high risk of rip currents. The greatest impacts are anticipated on Sunday morning, October 11, due to Tropical Storm Rachel, combined with increased swell, onshore winds, and high tides exceeding 7 feet.
Property owners in flood-prone areas should take immediate action to protect their assets. If travel is necessary, do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. The NWS advises everyone to remain out of the water to avoid hazardous swimming conditions.
