Extreme Heat Warning Issued for Yuma: Take Precautions Until Friday Evening
An Extreme Heat Warning has been issued for Yuma by the NWS Phoenix AZ, effective until Friday, October 9 at 8:00 PM MST, with dangerously hot temperatures expected up to 107 degrees Fahrenheit. Take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.
Yuma residents are advised to take immediate precautions as an Extreme Heat Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Phoenix AZ. The warning is effective from October 7 at 11:52 PM MST until Friday, October 9 at 8:00 PM MST.
Dangerously hot conditions are expected, with afternoon temperatures ranging from 103 to 107 degrees Fahrenheit. This level of heat carries a Major Heat Risk, meaning that overexposure can lead to heat cramps and heat exhaustion. Without intervention, these conditions can progress to heat stroke, which is a medical emergency.
To lessen the impact of the extreme heat, the NWS advises the following:
- Reschedule strenuous outdoor activities to early morning or evening hours.
- Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing.
- Drink plenty of water.
- Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
For those who work outdoors, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. If someone is overcome by heat, move them to a cool, shaded location. Heat stroke requires immediate medical attention; call 911.
Public cooling shelters may be available. Residents should consult with county officials for details on local cooling shelter locations.
