Law Library | Dane County Clerk of Courts Dane County Law Library The Dane County Law Library is located on the lower level of the Dane County Courthouse (Room: L1007) Location Public Service Hours Dane County Courthouse 215 South Hamilton Street Room L1007 Madison, WI 53703 Monday - Friday 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Contact Information Reference Line: (608) 266-6316 Email: [email protected] Fax: (608) 266-5988 Services The library has reference materials that may be used in the library on many topics including tenant/landlord law, Madison and Dane County ordinances, jury instructions, Wisconsin State Statutes, United States Code, and many other resources on family law, civil litigation, and criminal law. The public use computers have access to Westlaw (legal database) and other court resources as well as internet access and word processing software. Library staff can: Help you find the forms and materials you need Provide and explain Dane County court form directions Show you how to use various print and online resources Direct you to other government offices/agencies and non-profit services Please note that staff cannot provide legal advice, interpret the law, or help you draft legal forms or documents. Forms and Copies Paper versions of court forms and instructions are available for a small fee. There is a copy machine available for public use in the library. Copies and forms are 25 cents a page. The library takes payments by cash or by Visa/MasterCard. There is a three-dollar card minimum for the use of credit/debit cards. Staff can also direct you to the location of many forms and resources online. Most court forms and Dane County specific instructions are located on the Dane County Clerk of Courts Court Forms webpage. Legal Assistance Programs at the Dane County Courthouse In person legal assistance programs are available weekly for help with small claims (including evictions), family law, and domestic abuse intervention services. These programs are located in room L1022, which is located around the corner from the library. The schedule also includes information for clinics provided by the University of Wisconsin Law School. Public Record Requests | Dane County, Wisconsin Dane County records are presumed to be open for inspection and copying. Each elected official and each County Department is responsible for providing the public with access to its records. Records Custodians generally make public records available for in-person inspection and copying during normal business hours; however, specific hours are posted with each department. Wis. Stat. §19.35(1)(h) requires that requests for records to reasonably describe the subject matter and timeframe of requested records. Please ensure to include both with enough specificity to allow us to locate the appropriate records.
