Free sports physicals offered for Highlands County student-athletes

Free sports physicals, heart screenings help Highlands County student-athletes prepare for the season Published date: May 20, 2026 | Estimated read time: 2 minutes | Authored by: WFD Corporate Communications Topics: Care Community Share on Twitter Share on Facebook Share on LinkedIn Share on Pinterest About 50 student-athletes were able to get the exams during a special event at AdventHealth Medical Group Family Medicine at Sun ’n Lake in Sebring. SEBRING, Fla. — As families across Highlands County get ready for a new school sports season, AdventHealth recently partnered with the community to help make sure student-athletes have the care they need to safely take the field.Through a special event in Sebring, families had access to free sports physicals and ECG heart screenings, supporting both students’ health and parents’ peace of mind as they prepare for the year ahead. About 50 student-athletes were able to get the exams during the event at AdventHealth Medical Group Family Medicine at Sun ’n Lake, located at 6325 U.S. Highway 27 North, Suite 201, in Sebring. The ECG screenings were conducted by Who We Play For. Sports physicals and electrocardiogram (ECG) screenings are an important step in helping keep young athletes safe both on and off the field. They can identify potential health concerns early, especially heart-related conditions that may not show symptoms.“School sports play an important role in a child’s growth, confidence and connection to their community, and it’s important that families feel supported as their children prepare to participate,” said Dr. Victoria Selley, chief medical officer for AdventHealth Sebring, Lake Placid and Wauchula. “By offering these physicals and heart screenings, we’re helping more students safely take part in the activities they love while giving parents added confidence in their child’s health.” This event also helped make it easier for parents and their children to get ahead of Florida’s new student-athlete safety requirements. Beginning with the 2026–2027 school year, the state’s new Second Chance Act will require students to complete an ECG heart screening before participating in interscholastic athletics for the first time. For families who were unable to attend, AdventHealth Medical Group Family Medicine at Sun ’n Lake offers sports physicals and ECGs by appointment. To learn more or schedule a visit, you can go to AdventHealth Medical Group Family Medicine at Sun N Lake | AdventHealth Medical Group or call 863-382-9600. Foster Care Program - Orange County Animal Services

Foster Care Program Animal Services is pleased to offer a foster care program that places pets in temporary homes until they are ready for adoption, saving thousands of lives every year. The foster program is for pets that are sick, injured, in need of socialization skills and/or are too young for adoption. The program is available for select pets at Animal Services. Program Logistics New foster parents are always welcome to the team! Animal Services relies heavily on these individuals and their expertise to help animals that would not otherwise thrive at the shelter. Here is how one begins as a foster parent: Foster Orientation – The very first step is to attend the shelter's virtual orientation to learn more about the program. E-mail Posts – The shelter will post out animals in need of foster care via e-mail and the foster parent can select from any of those animals. Foster Rechecks - Foster parents are expected to transport the pets to the Animal Services clinic for rechecks every two weeks. Rechecks are on appointment basis in an effort to best serve the foster parent and ensure service as quick as possible. Foster rechecks are offered in the afternoon each day of the week. Adoption – When the pet is deemed ready for adoption the foster parent will return the pet to the shelter. Pictures and descriptions of the animals are very welcome and help to market the pet and find the ideal home. Foster parents are welcome to solicit adopters for their foster pets prior to their return to the shelter. The interested adopters will then report to Animal Services to complete the paperwork. To begin, please complete this form. Looking for a different foster experience? Consider fostering for a local rescue group! Rescue groups are primarily foster based and rely on individuals to provide temporary care. The more available foster homes they have, the more lifesaving they can accomplish. Find out more about the shelter's many rescue partners here. Foster Rechecks Foster parents caring for pets from Orange County Animal Services can make recheck appointments via the fostering services portal. Foster Gift Registry If interested in helping the foster program but unable to actually foster, the shelter welcomes donations specifically for the program. The shelter's registry wish list for supplies can be found online. Contact: Orange County Animal Services, Pet Rescue & Adoption Center, 2769 Conroy Road, Orlando, FL 32839, (407) 836-3111, [email protected]

The History of Camp Wewa

""Wewa" – Land of Many Waters", a well-fitting name for a camp surrounded by 3 lakes in the heart of Central Florida. The legacy and memories of Camp Wewa campers date back to the summer of 1925, when it was first purchased by the Boy Scouts with the help of the Apopka Chamber of Commerce for a total of $1,000. The first cohort of Wewa Campers consisted of 149 Central Florida Boy Scouts who spent the inaugural year in tents and enjoying the water features of Wewa; so much so that they declared the camp motto 'Every Scout a swimmer'. After renting the camp for 2 years, the property was then purchased by the YMCA of Central Florida in 1950. For more than 70 years YMCA ran, refurbished, and provided memories for thousands of campers across the world. YMCA in partnership with many local organizations, constructed many of Wewa's iconic buildings and features that are still present today. Camp Wewa Timeline: 1966: Construction of a swimming pool to provide a safe, clean place for campers to cool off, practice their aquatic skills and simply have fun. 1969: The North Orlando Kiwanis Club builds Ki-Nor-O Hall, the new dining hall. This building continues the tradition of support from the Kiwanis who have been a strong supporter of many of the construction projects at Camp Wewa. 1971: The North Orlando Kiwanis Club builds our current chapel. This chapel, another "landmark" feature of Camp Wewa, is dedicated to Bev Laws, former President of the Central Florida YMCA. 1978: The first double cabin is built in Front Camp 1980: The second double cabin is built, a new outdoor pavilion is constructed and the Trading Post is completed. 1985: An open-air pavilion is constructed to be used for arts and crafts and nature study. 1991: A new Low Ropes Course is completed as an Eagle Scout project, under the direct supervision of the Camp Wewa staff 2001: Construction is completed on "Goliath", the new 40-foot, 9-faced climbing tower. Incorporated into its design are: positive climbs, verticals, negative climbs, overhangs, chimney climbs, rappelling and dual zip lines that run to poles beside Mud Lake. 2003: The cabins were completely renovated and air-conditioning was added. The bathhouses were also renovated and updated 2005: The Archery range is rebuilt and the Chapel was renovated. Through partnerships with Lowe's Home Improvement, state grants and the "Friends of Camp Wewa" support group, The City of Apopka purchased this one-hundred-year-old camp, in August of 2021. After being closed for nearly two years following the Coronavirus Pandemic, Camp Wewa welcomed campers back in the summer of 2022."
