Hotel Cala, a new upscale hotel, will open Jan. along Tampa's Riverwalk at 200 N Ashley Drive. The 281-room establishment replaces the former Sheraton and is backed by Hilton.

Design firm Rockwell Group drew inspiration from Tampa's waterfront, tropical ambiance, and cultural heritage for the renovation.

Tao Group Hospitality will operate two dining and drinking establishments within the hotel. LAVO, the main restaurant, will serve coastal Italian cuisine, including house-made pastas and single-source flour pizzas. Signature dishes include "The Meatball," made with Wagyu, Italian sausage and veal, topped with whipped ricotta. LAVO will also feature a cocktail and wine program.

BarOnda, an outdoor waterfront bar, will offer a casual atmosphere with cocktails and shareable bites. Guests can also access a resort-style pool deck with cabanas and a fitness center. The property includes 10,000 square feet of event space.

Neil Luthra, founding partner of Newbond Holdings, stated the project aims to reimagine the historic site for a new generation and create a destination that blends hospitality, dining and culture for visitors and locals.
