Weston residents seeking information on Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) treatments will find that Ritalin and Adderall offer distinct approaches to managing the condition. Both stimulant medications aim to improve focus and attention by increasing key brain chemicals. Developmental pediatrician Carrie Cuffman, MD, explained that both Ritalin and Adderall boost dopamine and norepinephrine, neurotransmitters essential for managing ADHD symptoms like inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity.

While both medications target these symptoms, their mechanisms and durations differ. Adderall, an amphetamine, increases the release of dopamine and norepinephrine in addition to blocking their reuptake. Ritalin, a methylphenidate, primarily blocks the reuptake of these neurotransmitters. This difference affects their duration; Adderall typically lasts four to six hours, while Ritalin generally lasts three to four hours. Ritalin may also take effect slightly faster, around 20 minutes, compared to Adderall's onset of over 30 minutes.

Common side effects for both medications can include loss of appetite, nausea, trouble sleeping, headaches, and dry mouth. Adderall is more often associated with increased energy or overstimulation. Ritalin may more frequently cause moodiness or irritability as its effects subside. Dr. Cuffman emphasized that individual responses vary significantly, and treatment plans can be personalized with various short-acting and long-acting methylphenidate and amphetamine options, such as Focalin, Methylin, ProCentra, Evekeo, and Zenzedi.
