Tropical Storm Watch Issued for East-Central Mississippi

A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for ten East-Central Mississippi counties as Hurricane Isaias approaches the Gulf Coast, bringing potential for high winds, heavy rain, and flooding.

Residents in Clarke, Forrest, Jasper, Jones, Kemper, Lauderdale, Neshoba, Newton, Noxubee, and Winston counties should prepare for tropical storm conditions. The National Weather Service in Jackson, MS, has issued a Tropical Cyclone Local Statement tonight, October 8, at 10:20 PM CDT, warning that Hurricane Isaias is expected to approach the Northern Gulf Coast as a dangerous hurricane on Friday.

Isaias, currently 410 miles south of Hattiesburg, MS, with 105 mph winds, is moving northeast at 14 mph. While landfall is anticipated in the Florida Panhandle late Friday, tropical storm force winds, heavy rainfall, and flash flooding are possible across portions of southeast and east Mississippi. Potential impacts include downed trees, power outages, and localized flooding in low-lying areas. Conditions are expected to improve Saturday evening.

Check your emergency plan and supplies kit. If you are in a vulnerable location, such as a manufactured home or flood-prone area, consider moving to safer shelter. Stay informed by monitoring weather.gov, NOAA Weather Radio, and local news. The next update is expected around 6 AM CDT on October 9.
