A Storm Surge Watch has been issued for South Walton, effective today, October 7, at 2:00 PM EDT by the National Weather Service (NWS) Tallahassee. This alert indicates a severe and life-threatening storm surge is possible, with potential inundation of 4-7 feet above ground, and a threat for flooding greater than 6 feet above ground. Evacuation preparations should be underway for residents in Santa Rosa Beach, Sandestin, and Freeport.

Life-threatening storm surge is expected from Friday morning until Saturday morning. Winds of 40-50 mph with gusts up to 65 mph are forecast from Friday afternoon until early Saturday morning, with potential for significant wind damage to property. Scattered power and communications outages are possible. Additionally, 4-8 inches of rain, with locally higher amounts, are anticipated, which could lead to major flooding and prompt evacuations and rescues.

The NWS advises residents to complete preparations now before hazardous wind conditions begin. For storm surge, assemble disaster supplies and know your evacuation route. If evacuation orders are issued for your area, leave immediately. For flooding rain, heed all flood watches and warnings.
