Life-Threatening Storm Surge, Hurricane Watch Issued for South Walton
South Walton faces a Storm Surge Watch and Hurricane Watch issued by NWS Tallahassee FL, urging residents in Santa Rosa Beach, Sandestin, and Freeport to prepare for life-threatening storm surge, hurricane-force winds, and major flooding from Friday morning through Saturday morning.
South Walton residents are urged to finalize preparations for life-threatening storm surge and hurricane-force winds. The National Weather Service (NWS) Tallahassee FL issued a Storm Surge Watch and Hurricane Watch at 11:04 AM EDT on October 7, affecting Santa Rosa Beach, Sandestin, and Freeport.
A life-threatening storm surge of 4-7 feet above ground is possible between Friday morning and Saturday morning. Evacuation preparations should be underway, and residents must leave if evacuation orders are given. Potential impacts include extensive structural damage, washed-out roads, and severe beach erosion.
Hurricane-force winds are possible within the next 48 hours, with peak winds of 40-50 mph and gusts up to 65 mph expected from Friday afternoon until Saturday morning. Significant wind damage is possible, including damage to roofs, siding, and mobile homes, as well as downed trees and power outages. Complete preparations now before hazardous winds arrive.
Additionally, 4-8 inches of rain, with locally higher amounts, could cause major flooding. Heed all flood watches and warnings. The NWS advises monitoring official sources like weather.gov/tallahassee and floridadisaster.org for updates.
