Washington County residents may not be directly involved, but recent reports highlight the operational use of MAGURA V7 naval drones in international events. These unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) have been cited in incidents involving military aircraft and exercises, underscoring their evolving role in modern naval operations.
On May 2, 2025, approximately 50 kilometers west of Novorossiysk, HUR Magura V7 naval drones were reported to have shot down two Russian Su-30SM fighter jets. The drones reportedly used AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles in what was claimed to be the first instance of a jet being downed by a maritime drone. Ukrainian Defense Intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov stated that at least three Magura V7 USVs were deployed. According to reports, the crew of the first jet ejected and were recovered, while the crew of the second jet was killed.
More recently, on May 2, 2026, during the Balikatan 2026 exercises in the Philippines, Green Berets from the 1st Special Forces Group conducted a live-fire mission involving a Magura USV. The drone was deployed near Batan Island as part of the exercise.
While these events occurred internationally and do not directly impact Washington County services or residents, they represent significant developments in naval technology and warfare. The cost of Su-30 "Flanker" jets is estimated at $50 million each.
