High Surf Warning for South Walton, Coastal Bay; Avoid Water

A High Surf Warning is in effect for South Walton and Coastal Bay through Sunday morning, with dangerously large waves and rip currents; residents must stay out of the water.

Residents and visitors in South Walton and Coastal Bay areas are advised to stay out of the water due to a High Surf Warning issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Tallahassee, FL. The warning is in effect from Friday, October 9, at 10:00 AM CDT until Sunday, October 11, at 10:00 AM CDT.

Dangerously large breaking waves of 8 to 12 feet are expected in the surf zone along Walton and Bay County beaches. These conditions can sweep individuals off jetties and docks into dangerous seas, leading to life-threatening swimming conditions and significant beach erosion.

A High Rip Current Risk is also in effect through late Sunday night, with rip currents capable of sweeping even strong swimmers away from shore. The NWS explicitly instructs everyone to remain out of the water due to these life-threatening conditions. Additionally, stay off jetties, piers, and any other waterside infrastructure.

If caught in a rip current, the NWS advises relaxing and floating. Do not swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If escape is not possible, face the shore and call or wave for help.
