A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Washington County, including Chatom and Millry, by the National Weather Service (NWS) Mobile AL, effective immediately. This warning, issued October 8 at 9:57 PM CDT, indicates severe conditions are expected, with the NWS urging residents to complete all remaining preparations for wind and flooding as soon as possible and to move to safe shelter before hazardous conditions begin.
Strong tropical storm force winds are anticipated, with peak forecasts of 25-35 mph and gusts up to 40 mph, but with the potential for winds reaching 58 to 73 mph. These winds could cause significant damage, including to roofing, siding, mobile homes, and trees. Scattered power and communication outages are likely. A Flood Watch is also in effect, with 2-4 inches of rain expected, and locally higher amounts possible. This could lead to major flooding, prompting evacuations and rescues. Rivers, streams, and canals may overflow, and roads could become impassable. Failure to take action could result in serious injury or loss of life.
The NWS states that tornadoes are not expected at this time. This warning is set to expire on October 9 at 6:00 AM UTC. For local information, contact Washington County EMA at 251-847-2668. For storm impacts, visit www.weather.gov/mob.
