WASHINGTON COUNTY — Residents in Chatom and Millry must act immediately to prepare for a Tropical Storm Warning, issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Mobile AL at 10:06 AM CDT today, October 8. This severe alert is effective immediately and expires at 6:15 PM CDT today.
Dangerous winds are expected, with peak forecasts of 15-25 mph and gusts up to 30 mph. However, there is a potential for winds to reach 58 to 73 mph. Significant impacts include potential damage to roofs, awnings, and mobile homes, as well as several large trees being snapped or uprooted. Unsecured lightweight objects could become dangerous projectiles. Residents should complete all preparations now before winds become hazardous.
Moderate flooding rain is also anticipated, with 3-6 inches of rainfall and locally higher amounts possible. This may lead to evacuations and rescues, with rivers and tributaries potentially overflowing. Be prepared for floodwaters to enter structures and make driving conditions hazardous. Heed all flood watches and warnings.
The NWS also indicates a potential for a few tornadoes. If a tornado warning is issued, be ready to shelter quickly. If your shelter is vulnerable, relocate to a safe location beforehand.
