Tropical Storm Warning Issued for Washington County: Act Immediately
A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Washington County, including Chatom and Millry, effective immediately, with hazardous winds and significant flood potential expected. Residents should secure property, move to safe shelter, and heed all flood warnings.
WASHINGTON COUNTY – Residents in Chatom and Millry must act immediately to secure property and move to safe shelter due to a Tropical Storm Warning issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Mobile AL this morning, October 9, at 10:00 AM CDT. The warning is effective until 6:00 PM UTC today.
Peak wind gusts of 25-35 mph, potentially reaching 45 mph, are expected. Prepare for limited wind damage, including to porches, awnings, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes. Large tree limbs may break, and some trees could be snapped or uprooted. Scattered power and communications outages are possible. All remaining efforts to protect property should be completed as soon as possible before hazardous winds begin.
A Flood Watch is also in effect. An additional 1-3 inches of rain is forecast, with locally higher amounts, posing a significant threat of moderate flooding. Moderate rainfall flooding may prompt evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries could swell, leading to localized overflows. Floodwaters may enter some structures, and driving conditions will become hazardous in low-lying areas. Heed all flood watches and warnings; failure to take action could result in serious injury or loss of life.
The NWS currently reports that tornadoes are not expected. For local information, contact Washington County EMA at 251-847-2668. For storm impacts, visit www.weather.gov/mob.
