Coastal Volusia County residents and visitors are advised to avoid entering the surf due to a Rip Current Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Melbourne FL. Dangerous rip currents are expected through late tonight, October 9, 2026, until 5:00 AM EDT.

Rip currents are powerful channels of water that flow quickly away from shore. They commonly occur at low spots or breaks in sandbars, and near structures like jetties and piers. These currents can sweep even strong swimmers away from the shore into deeper water.

The NWS strongly discourages entering the surf. If you are caught in a rip current, remain calm and float. Do not attempt to swim against the current. If possible, swim parallel to the shoreline. If you cannot escape, face the shore and signal for help by calling or waving. Always heed the advice of lifeguards, beach patrol flags, and posted signs.
