Florida Blue Envelope Program Helps Venice Residents with Autism

Venice residents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) will soon have a new tool to facilitate communication during traffic stops. A Florida law, effective July 1, 2026, establishes a "blue envelope program" to improve interactions between individuals with ASD and law enforcement officers.

The Florida Department of Highway Safety & Motor Vehicles will develop and distribute the blue envelopes by January 1, 2027. The envelopes may hold identification documents that a person with ASD can present to an officer during a traffic stop.

The initiative aims to provide a clear, consistent method for individuals with ASD to share necessary information, potentially reducing anxiety and misunderstandings during stressful situations.

Individuals interested in obtaining a blue envelope should check the Department of Highway Safety & Motor Vehicles' office website in early January 2027 for distribution information.
