The Federal Aviation Administration recently brought hypoxia awareness training to the Florida Tech campus in Titusville. From April 22-25, the Enterprise Building hosted sessions that gave 221 participants a firsthand understanding of how oxygen deficiency affects the body.
The FAA's Portable Reduced Oxygen Training Enclosure (PROTE) simulated high-altitude conditions by reducing oxygen concentration, mimicking physiological effects at approximately 25,000 feet. Participants identified their own physical and cognitive symptoms as oxygen levels dropped, a critical skill for flight safety over areas like the Indian River Lagoon.
Most participants were students from Florida Tech's College of Aeronautics. The hands-on experience reinforced classroom instruction by allowing students to encounter hypoxia's impairing effects near the Kennedy Space Center.
Jayden Mayer, a senior in aviation management with flight, called the experience "fascinating and slightly humbling." "It taught me firsthand how important hypoxia awareness really is," Mayer said. "This opportunity made me more confident, aware and, ultimately, a safer pilot."
