Tampa Police Officer Arrested for 100+ MPH Speeding
Hillsborough County Sheriff's deputies arrested Tampa Police Officer Jason Brown on Sunday for driving more than 100 mph on southbound Interstate 75 near Big Bend Road in Riverview.
Brown, hired by Tampa Police in 2008, was stopped just before 6:30 a.m. on May 31. Deputies said he drove in excess of 100 mph in his personal vehicle and weaved between lanes on the stretch of highway where traffic typically moves at posted speeds of 65 to 70 mph.
Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw said the arrest contradicts the department's standards. "Driving at excessive speeds and recklessly endangering others is unacceptable," Bercaw said. "I expect our officers to lead by example, and this conduct falls short of that expectation."
Brown was already on administrative duty because of an unrelated internal investigation. Tampa Police will review the new arrest as part of that ongoing process.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office filed charges against Brown.
