Tampa Police Officer Arrested on Child Sexual Abuse Charges

Tampa police arrested officer Jonathan Darling, 31, on June 15 on charges of unlawful sexual activity with a minor, use of a two-way communications device, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
Detectives from the department's Internet Crimes Against Children squad took Darling into custody at his home around 2 p.m. and transported him to Orient Road Jail. The department hired Darling in 2019 and relieved him of duty immediately upon arrest.
The investigation began May 15 after the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children alerted detectives to suspicious financial transactions between an adult male and a possible minor. Detectives confirmed the victim was 16 and received allegations of criminal acts May 26. Darling met the victim through an adult dating app.
Electronic evidence showed Darling and the minor exchanged explicit photographs, discussed sexual activity, and arranged travel between December 2025 and March 2026. Darling also purchased marijuana for the victim and arranged delivery to his residence, according to the department.
"When you wear our badge, you are held to the highest standard of public trust," Chief Lee Bercaw said. "This individual shattered that standard and dishonored the dedicated officers who serve our community with integrity every day."
The investigation remains active pending completion of the department's disciplinary process. Prosecutors will review the evidence to determine whether additional charges are warranted.
