Matt Cox's Top Florida Cultural Picks

Tampa Bay area native Matt Cox, host of the YouTube channel and podcast "Matthew Cox Inside True Crime," recently highlighted three of his favorite Florida cultural destinations.

Cox, who grew up in Temple Terrace, recommends The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota. He admires the Ringlings' legacy and John Ringling's acquisition of the Barnum and Bailey circus during the Depression. The couple bequeathed their estate to Florida, making their art collection publicly accessible. Their Sarasota home also served as a filming location for the movie "Great Expectations."

Another cherished spot for Cox is the Withlacoochee River. He has taken multiple airboat tours on the river since his teenage years, describing the experience as a journey back in time. Cox notes the river's majestic swamp and tree landscape, reminiscent of prehistoric times. During a recent tour, he observed approximately 100 small alligators and enjoyed the unique opportunity for lunch in an isolated setting. He often imagines Spanish conquistadors navigating the riverbanks, a stark contrast to downtown Tampa's energy.

Cox also praised Gil Castillo, a man he considers a true Floridian. Castillo, formerly known as Kachunga, performed an alligator wrestling show for years. Today, he leads airboat tours and manages a yacht company in downtown Tampa. He resides in Dade City and keeps alligators in a large enclosure. Cox describes Castillo as embodying the authentic Florida spirit, complete with a cigar, scotch, and a hat resembling Crocodile Dundee's.
