Renters Save Thousands in Major US Cities: Tampa Insights

Tampa residents considering their housing options can glean valuable insights from a recent analysis comparing renting versus buying across U.S. metropolitan areas. The study, published Sept. 23, 2026, by Zillow, found that renting proves significantly cheaper than buying in every major market analyzed.
Zillow researchers compared households with identical incomes to assess housing costs. For buyers, the analysis factored in a 10% down payment, a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage, property taxes, insurance, and closing costs. Renters were accounted for paying only monthly rent and renter's insurance.
The findings reveal a substantial financial advantage for renters. Nationally, the typical monthly rent in August stood at $1,948, compared to $3,014 for a typical homeowner's mortgage, taxes, and insurance. This difference amounts to $1,066 per month, or $12,792 annually.
While Tampa was not explicitly listed among the top cities for savings, the report highlights that the largest financial advantages for renters occurred in expensive coastal markets. San Jose, California, led the nation with renters saving an average of $7,883 per month ($94,596 annually). Other cities with substantial renter savings included San Francisco ($64,956 annually), Los Angeles ($53,292 annually), and San Diego ($50,820 annually). The analysis covered 50 of the largest U.S. metro cities.
