Davenport Student Dies in US 27 Electric Scooter Crash

DAVENPORT, Fla. – A 14-year-old Davenport High School student died Thursday night after an electric scooter he was riding collided with a vehicle on U.S. 27. The Polk County Sheriff's Office responded to the crash around 7:55 p.m. on Thursday, September 17, 2026, at the intersection of U.S. 27 and McFee Drive in the Four Corners area.

Investigators reported the teen was riding a NIU Kick electric scooter and entered the crosswalk on U.S. 27 while traveling east. A black 2026 Ford Explorer, traveling north in the center lane, had a green light and struck the student as he entered its path.

Emergency crews transported the ninth-grader to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries. The driver of the Ford Explorer, a 38-year-old man from Orlando, remained at the scene and cooperated with deputies. The crash temporarily closed all northbound lanes of U.S. 27 for about three hours. Authorities do not anticipate filing criminal charges, but the investigation continues.

Polk County Public Schools issued a statement: “This is an incredibly sad day for Davenport High and the surrounding community. He was a sweet and personable young man who was well liked by his teachers and fellow freshmen. Our hearts go out to his family and friends. Counselors and mental health supports are available to DHS students and staff if they need help in this difficult time.”

Officials have not released the name of the 14-year-old victim.
