Landspout Threat Near Fleming Island; Seek Shelter Indoors

A Special Weather Statement has been issued for a strong thunderstorm capable of producing a landspout near Fleming Island, impacting several counties with wind gusts up to 50 mph and heavy rain until 10:15 PM EDT; seek indoor shelter.

Residents in Inland Nassau, Coastal Duval, Eastern Clay, Trout River, Western Clay, South Central Duval, Western Duval, and Western St. Johns counties are advised to seek shelter indoors immediately. The National Weather Service (NWS) Jacksonville FL has issued a Special Weather Statement for a strong thunderstorm capable of producing a landspout.

As of 9:52 PM EDT, Doppler radar indicated this storm near Fleming Island, approximately 7 miles northwest of Green Cove Springs, moving north at 25 mph. The primary hazards are landspouts and wind gusts up to 50 mph. Impacts could include minor damage to outdoor objects, downed tree limbs, and unsecured objects being blown around.

Locations that may be impacted include Jacksonville, Orange Park, Middleburg, Arlington, Fleming Island, Ortega, Oakleaf Plantation, Bellair-Meadowbrook Terrace, Bryceville, and Cecil Field. This statement is effective immediately and expires at 10:15 PM EDT tonight, October 9, 2026.

In addition to wind hazards, torrential rainfall is occurring with this storm, which may cause localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways. If you are outdoors in the affected areas, please consider seeking shelter inside a building.
