Fort Myers' Edison and Ford Winter Estates will soon feature a new welcome center designed to improve the visitor experience and support the historic site's growth. The 7,764-square-foot facility marks the first new building in the estate's five-year master plan. Architect Joyce Owens designed the center, which will include an extended roof canopy for shade and rain shelter. It will house ticketing, reception, administrative offices and archives. Outdoor public restrooms and covered visitor areas are also part of the plan.
Chris-Tel Construction will build the facility. Construction is scheduled to begin in the coming months and will last approximately one year. The project's total cost has not been released. Recent upgrades to the estate's parking facilities accommodate its growing visitor numbers.
The Edison and Ford Winter Estates, a nonprofit organization, preserves the winter homes, gardens, museum, laboratory and archives of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. The 20-acre property along the Caloosahatchee River has welcomed more than 200,000 visitors annually since opening to the public in 1947. The master plan aims to preserve the historic structures while adding new spaces to support the site's popularity and educational mission.
