Dangerous Rip Currents Expected Along Gulf Coast Through Saturday Night
A Rip Current Statement has been issued for coastal areas of Alabama and Florida, warning of dangerous rip currents through Saturday night, October 11.
Coastal residents and visitors are advised to exercise extreme caution due to a Rip Current Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Mobile, Alabama. Dangerous rip currents are expected along the Alabama and Florida Gulf Coasts, effective immediately through late Saturday night, October 11, at 6:00 AM CDT.
The NWS has identified Mobile Coastal and Baldwin Coastal Counties in Alabama, and Escambia Coastal, Santa Rosa Coastal, and Okaloosa Coastal Counties in Florida as the affected areas. Rip currents pose a significant danger, capable of sweeping even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper waters.
To ensure safety, the NWS urges individuals to swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, remain calm and float. Do not attempt to swim against the current. Instead, if possible, swim parallel to the shoreline. If you are unable to escape, face the shore and signal for help by calling or waving.
