Victory for Voters: Supreme Court Determines Postal Service May Not Enact Changes ahead of 2026 General Election

The United States Supreme Court today ruled in favor of plaintiffs – including Colorado – seeking to stop the Postal Service from enacting rules in support of President Trump's March 31, 2026 Executive Order, which sought to force drastic changes to election administration ahead of November. Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold has issued the following statement: Trump’s attempt to sabotage the 2026 elections has failed. Courts have blocked Trump from using the Postal Service to choose which voters could receive a mail ballot. Trump will continue to fail in his efforts to take control of the 2026 midterms. We will fight every attempt to suppress the vote or unlawfully federalize elections. Today’s decision is a major victory for Colorado and American democracy. Mail ballots have been protected for Colorado voters In Colorado, every active voter will be mailed a ballot ahead of the 2026 General Election. County Clerks are required to send ballots to all voters between October 2 and October 9, 2026. Ballot drop boxes will be available statewide beginning October 12, 2026, and voter centers will be open statewide beginning October 19, 2026. On August 26, Colorado joined 24 states and the District of Columbia in suing the United States Postal Service to stop the Postal Service from limiting who can receive a mail ballot. The lawsuit was filed after the Postal Service formally adopted rules (PDF) in accordance with President Trump’s 2026 Executive Order – the second Executive Order issued directly related to election administration during President Trump’s second term. The President’s first executive order on elections issued during his second term, which sought changes to voter registration requirements, has been largely enjoined. "BallotTrax allows voters to follow their ballot from the time it is sent to when it is counted," said Secretary Griswold. "Ballots will be sent to voters earlier this election, and I encourage all Colorado voters to take advantage of this easy-to-use service during the 2026 General Election in Colorado." BallotTrax enables voters to receive notifications by phone, email, or text about the status of their mail ballot. There are currently more than 2.2 million Coloradans enrolled in the program, accounting for 57% of Colorado's active voters. Messages about the status of voter ballots will begin after ballots are mailed by counties. Ballots will be mailed to military and overseas voters by Saturday, September 19, 2026 and to all other active voters between October 2 and October 9, 2026. October 12 - The minimum number of required drop boxes must be open. October 19 - The minimum number of required voter centers must be open. October 26 - Deadline to register to vote and still be mailed a ballot. After this date, register and then vote in person. October 26 - Last suggested day to return ballots by mail. October 27 - Voters who have not yet returned their mail ballots by this date should physically deliver their ballot within their signed return envelope to a ballot drop box or vote center or vote in person at a vote center. November 3 - Election Day. Voters must submit their ballot or be in line to vote by 7:00 PM for their ballot to be counted. County Road 90/90A Closed at San Miguel River Bridge for Months-Long Repair Project
County Road 90 (also known as 90A) will be closed at the San Miguel River Bridge for bridge replacement and repairs beginning Monday, September 25, 2023. The closure is expected to last for several months. There will be no through traffic access.
Multiple San Miguel County Roads Closed Due to Mudslides, Flooding, and Downed Trees
MULTIPLE ROAD CLOSURES DUE TO MUD SLIDES, FLOODING AND DOWNED TREES County Road 63L (Last Dollar Road) is closed from the top of the pass to Highway 145. County Road 63J (Specie Mesa) is closed from the top of the pass to Highway 145. County Road 63 (Fall Creek) is closed from the bottom to the top of the pass. County Road 61 (Sunshine Mesa) is closed at the top due to downed trees. We anticipate many of these roads will be closed for an extended period of time. Drivers are advised to use extreme caution, avoid non-essential travel in affected areas, and check road conditions before traveling.
