The United States Supreme Court today ruled in favor of plaintiffs – including Colorado – seeking to stop the Postal Service from enacting rules in support of President Trump's March 31, 2026 Executive Order, which sought to force drastic changes to election administration ahead of November. Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold has issued the following statement: Trump’s attempt to sabotage the 2026 elections has failed. Courts have blocked Trump from using the Postal Service to choose which voters could receive a mail ballot. Trump will continue to fail in his efforts to take control of the 2026 midterms. We will fight every attempt to suppress the vote or unlawfully federalize elections. Today’s decision is a major victory for Colorado and American democracy. Mail ballots have been protected for Colorado voters In Colorado, every active voter will be mailed a ballot ahead of the 2026 General Election. County Clerks are required to send ballots to all voters between October 2 and October 9, 2026. Ballot drop boxes will be available statewide beginning October 12, 2026, and voter centers will be open statewide beginning October 19, 2026. On August 26, Colorado joined 24 states and the District of Columbia in suing the United States Postal Service to stop the Postal Service from limiting who can receive a mail ballot. The lawsuit was filed after the Postal Service formally adopted rules (PDF) in accordance with President Trump’s 2026 Executive Order – the second Executive Order issued directly related to election administration during President Trump’s second term. The President’s first executive order on elections issued during his second term, which sought changes to voter registration requirements, has been largely enjoined.
