San Diego County residents, prepare for significant impacts this Sunday, October 11, as Tropical Storm Rachel approaches. A Tropical Storm Watch is now in effect for all of San Diego County, including Coastal Areas, Inland Valleys, Mountains, and Deserts. The National Weather Service (NWS) San Diego has issued a Tropical Cyclone Local Statement (HLSSGX) due to the expected arrival of the storm.
The NWS warns of potential life-threatening rainfall flooding across San Diego County, with expected totals of 0.50 to 1.25 inches for coast, valleys, and deserts, and 1 to 2.5 inches for mountains. Peak rainfall rates could reach 0.70 to 1 inch per hour in mountainous regions. Coastal areas face high confidence for significant flooding and beach erosion, with surf potentially peaking at 5 to 8 feet and sets to 9 feet. Winds of 39+ mph are expected, especially in southern and eastern parts of the county, with gusts up to 60 mph on mountain ridges.
Take immediate action to protect your family and property. Secure any loose outdoor objects that could become airborne. If you live in low-lying areas, near the ocean, or in poor drainage areas, plan to move to safe shelter on higher ground. Prepare an emergency plan and supplies kit. Closely monitor official updates from weather.gov, NOAA Weather Radio, and local news. The NWS San Diego will issue its next update around 2 AM PDT.
