Beach Hazards Statement Issued: Coastal Flooding, High Surf Expected
A Beach Hazards Statement has been issued for San Diego and Orange County Coastal Areas, warning of significant coastal flooding, high surf, and dangerous rip currents from Friday evening through Tuesday afternoon.
Residents and visitors in San Diego and Orange County Coastal Areas are advised to take immediate action due to a Beach Hazards Statement issued by the National Weather Service San Diego CA. This alert, effective from Friday, October 9, at 8:27 PM PDT, warns of significant coastal flooding, high surf, and dangerous rip currents.
A Coastal Flood Warning is in effect through Sunday afternoon, with significant coastal flooding and erosion possible. From Sunday morning through Sunday evening, surf of 5 to 7 feet with local sets up to 9 feet is expected. A Coastal Flood Advisory for minor coastal flooding will then be in effect from 3 PM Sunday to 2 PM PDT Tuesday.
Impacts include numerous roads and walking paths potentially closing due to high water. Low-lying property, including homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure, may flood. Shoreline erosion will occur during high tides in the mornings. Increased surf will lead to a high risk of rip currents.
The greatest impacts are anticipated on Sunday morning, October 11, due to Tropical Storm Rachel, combining increased swell, onshore winds, and high tides locally over 7 feet.
Actionable information: Take necessary actions to protect flood-prone property. If travel is required, do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Avoid beaches during high tides. Remain out of the water to avoid hazardous swimming conditions. Stay off of sea walls and jetties.
