Tropical Storm Rachel Approaches San Diego: Coastal Flooding, Wind, Rain Expected
Tropical Storm Rachel is approaching San Diego County, with a Tropical Storm Watch in effect for coastal flooding, strong winds, and heavy rain expected Sunday.
San Diego County residents, prepare for significant impacts from Tropical Storm Rachel beginning Sunday. The National Weather Service (NWS) in San Diego has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for all San Diego County Coastal Areas, Deserts, Mountains, and Valleys.
Tropical Storm Rachel is approximately 600 miles southwest of San Diego, moving northeast and anticipated to make landfall near the US/Mexico Border Saturday evening. The NWS forecasts coastal flooding, strong winds, and heavy rain, with the majority of impacts expected on Sunday.
Coastal areas face a high threat of significant flooding and beach erosion due to high tides over 7 feet, combined with south and northwest swells, and increased onshore winds. Surf is expected to peak at 6 to 9 feet on Sunday.
Widespread rain is expected Sunday, with the heaviest rainfall anticipated in San Diego County mountains and deserts. Flash and urban flooding are probable. The San Diego River at Fashion Valley is forecast to peak just below monitor stage Sunday afternoon; those near the river should monitor forecasts.
Sustained winds of 39+ mph are expected, particularly in southern and eastern parts of San Diego County, with gusts up to 60 mph possible in mountain ridges, passes, and canyons. Prepare for potential damage to outdoor structures and scattered power outages. Secure loose outdoor items. Have an emergency plan and supplies ready, and monitor official updates from weather.gov, NOAA Weather Radio, and local news outlets. The next NWS update is expected around 8 AM PDT.
