St. Martin Parish Evacuation Order for Hurricane Francine
St. Martin Parish President Pete Delcambre issued a voluntary evacuation order Tuesday for residents of Stephensville and Belle River as Hurricane Francine approaches the Louisiana coast. The evacuation took effect immediately at 11 a.m. on Sept. 10.
Storm surge could reach 5 to 10 feet in Lower St. Martin Parish, threatening the low-lying communities with significant flooding. Residents who stay must prepare to shelter in place until floodwaters recede.
"There is a chance that flood waters could render you unable to leave your home," said Major Ginny Higgins, public information officer for the St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office.
Residents who remain should stock food, water, medications, and supplies for several days without outside assistance. Those who evacuate should secure their homes, turn off utilities if instructed, and bring important documents, medications, and pets, as emergency shelters may not accept animals.
If flooding occurs, residents should move to the highest floor of their home and avoid walking or driving through floodwater. Six inches of moving water can knock a person down; two feet can sweep away most vehicles.
For information, residents can contact the St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office at (337) 394-3071 or monitor local emergency management channels.
