Obituary: Laura Yegge
Laura Ann Yegge, age 21, of Seneca, Illinois, passed away on May 21, 2026. She was born on July 23, 2004, in Morris, Illinois, and lived a life marked by quiet strength, determination, and a deep love for the people and experiences that brought her joy.Laura was the cherished daughter of Todd and Darcy (Zimmerman) Yegge of Seneca. She was a beloved sister to Brett (Maddy Hale) Yegge, of Streator, and a proud aunt to Sawyer Yegge and Maylee Kay Yegge. She is also lovingly remembered by her grandparents, Mark and Monty Yegge of The Villages, Florida, and Don and Betty Zimmerman of Anamosa, Iowa, along with numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins who will forever hold her close in their hearts. Her family was the center of her world, and she gave them love, laughter, and unwavering devotion throughout her life.Laura graduated from Seneca High School with the class of 2022, where she distinguished herself as an Illinois State Scholar and a student on the high honor roll. She was known for her extraordinary dedication to her education and for the discipline she carried with her through every challenge. Even during treatments, she refused to let her schoolwork slip and maintained a 4.0 GPA through perseverance and determination. She made many sacrifices to keep her studies at their very best, and her commitment to learning reflected the remarkable character she displayed in every area of her life. At the time of her passing, she was a student at Northwestern University, enrolled in the online program through the School of Professional Studies for Health Sciences. Laura approached her education with seriousness, grace, and a deep desire to build a meaningful future.During her years at Seneca High School, Laura was active in many activities and made a lasting impression on those around her. She served as manager for the wrestling team all four years of high school, supported her classmates with steady loyalty, and contributed her time and energy with genuine pride. She was also involved in band and FFA, where she found opportunities to grow, learn, and connect with others. Laura was an all-conference golfer and took great pride in her achievements on the course. Through FFA horticulture, she continued to explore her interests and develop the skills she valued. Her involvement in school activities reflected her spirit of service, her willingness to work hard, and her ability to encourage those around her.Laura lived with a warm heart and a love for the simple pleasures that made life special. She loved to visit Galena and enjoyed the excitement of going to Medieval Times. She found happiness in cooking, trying new restaurants, and spending time at coffee shops. Music was one of her great joys, and she especially treasured the time she spent with friends. Her dog, Murry, held a special place in her heart, and she loved him dearly. Laura had a gift for appreciating life’s meaningful moments, and she brought that same appreciation to the people and places she loved.Those who knew Laura will remember her as an extremely dedicated student, a loving family member, and a young woman of quiet courage. She faced life with determination and grace, and even in difficult times she remained committed to the goals and responsibilities that mattered to her. Her strength inspired those around her, and her kindness left a lasting mark on everyone fortunate enough to know her. Laura’s life, though far too brief, was filled with purpose, love, and promise.Laura Ann Yegge will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her family, friends, classmates, teachers, and all who were touched by her life. Obituary: Erling Varland
Erling Jay Varland, known to family and friends as Jay, passed away on May 20, 2026, in Joliet, Illinois, at the age of 79.He was born on August 28, 1946, in Grand Forks, North Dakota, and lived a life marked by kindness, loyalty, and devotion to the people and places he loved. Jay carried himself with a steady, humble spirit and was known for the warmth of his smile, his easy conversation, and the genuine interest he took in others. He built a life centered on family, friendship, and simple pleasures, and those who knew him will remember him for the love he gave so freely and the good humor he brought into everyday moments.Jay was a devoted husband to Elsa Sudaria, and together they shared a life filled with love, companionship, and family. He took great pride in his children and stepchildren and was deeply grateful for the many blessings that came through his growing family. He is survived by his children, Patricia (Todd) Tesdal, Hesper (Dean) Matzo, and Matthew (Tracy) Varland; his stepchildren, Desiree (Chance) Reynolds and Rayve (Jeanette) Agustin; and his cherished grandchildren, Taggert Tesdal, Tucker Tesdal, Maveric Varland, Harleigh Varland, Gunner Varland, Brahm Matzo, Allari Reynolds, Jalia Agustin, Nikko Agustin, Kylan Agustin, and Araya Agustin. His grandchildren were among the great joys of his life, and he loved each of them dearly.He is also survived by his brothers, John Varland and Ralph (Donna) Varland; his brother and sister-in-law, Elvira (Michael) Balacaoc and Rosemary (Eddie) Sotelo; and his mother-in-law, Virginia Sudaria. Jay was preceded in death by his parents, John and Freda (Schmitke) Varland; his son-in-law, Darren Matteson; his granddaughter, Elle Tesdal; his sister, Betty (Robert) Ashbaugh; his brothers, Paul Varland and Harvey Varland; his sister-in-law, Renelle Varland; and his father-in-law, Miguel Sudaria. He is also preceded by his beloved dog, Chauncy, who was a faithful companion.Jay was a man who believed in community and service. He was proud to be part of the Morris Lions Club and the Morris American Legion, where he valued fellowship and the chance to serve alongside others. He also had a generous heart and a spirit that reached beyond his own community, including his support for children in the Philippines, where he donated money so schools could provide Christmas dinner for the kids. His kindness extended in meaningful ways, and he never lost sight of the importance of helping others when he could.In his free time, Jay enjoyed the outdoors and found peace in fishing and hunting. He loved the simple adventure of a good garage sale and the excitement of finding something unexpected. He was also a loyal sports fan, cheering for the Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Cubs with the kind of enthusiasm that made those teams part of his everyday conversations. Above all else, Jay loved his grandkids, and his family will forever cherish the memories of his encouragement, his humor, and his steady presence in their lives.Jay’s life was one of devotion, generosity, and deep family ties. He will be remembered for the love he shared, the values he lived by, and the lasting impact he made on all who had the privilege of knowing him. James Allen Wren, Korea Veteran, Passes Away
James Allen Wren, known to many as Jimmy, passed away on June 3, 2026, in Naperville, Illinois, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on January 17, 1951, in Mazon, Illinois, and lived a life marked by hard work and perseverance.Jimmy was a proud veteran who served his country in Korea with the United States Army. Following his military service, Jimmy worked as a mechanic and also spent time on a shrimp boat. Whether he was repairing something that needed attention or working with his hands in demanding conditions, he approached every task with care and competence. He took pride in doing things the right way.Jimmy’s life was also shaped by the people he loved and the family he held close. He is preceded in death by Sandra Peterson, who shared many years of companionship and devotion with him. Also preceded in death by his mother and father, as well as fifteen siblings, all of whom held an important place in his life and memory. The bonds of family, both immediate and extended, were an important part of who he was, and he carried those connections with him throughout his life.He will be remembered as a man of few words but a big heart. Jimmy did not seek attention or praise, but he left a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to know him.Though his passing leaves a deep void, his memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him and in the many lives he touched along the way.Burial will be held privately with family.

Obituary: Ida Romo
Ida Sophia RomoAge 80Ida Sophia Romo, 80, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, around 7:30 p.m., just before bedtime, on Earth Day; a date that felt especially fitting for a woman so deeply connected to life, home, and the world around her.Ida was born on May 12, 1945, in Chicago, Illinois, to Josephine Angelina Lange (née Tomasello) and her father, a member of the Zurawski family, whose full name remains to be added. She was raised within a richly layered family story, alongside her younger brother, Lester Wold. From this foundation, Ida grew into the strong, private, and deeply rooted woman she would become.Ida was sharp, witty, loving, and morally centered. She had a strong sense of justice and fairness, and she never hesitated to stand up for what she believed was right, no matter how difficult the fight. She was stubborn in the best way, focused, and unafraid to speak her mind. Beneath that strength was a fierce and devoted love for her family. Though she could be tough with the world, she was endlessly loving to those who mattered most.Her hobbies included cooking, sewing, gardening, and crafting. She found joy in the simple, beautiful rhythms of home and care. Ida was also known as a talented realtor and a self-published author of Home Style Mexican Cooking, a reflection of her love for food, family, and tradition.Some of the most cherished memories of Ida were made in her garden, where she could often be found watering herbs, digging up garlic, or proudly showing off her flowers. She cooked the best sunny eggs, Italian bread, pasta, biscotti, jalapeño jelly, and hot buttered rum, she was truly a marvelous chef.She also made the best, most decadent, delicious cheesecake you’ve ever had in your life; a recipe so loved it will be shared in her honor with those who gather to remember her.Ida had a playful spirit and a sense of humor that those closest to her will never forget. She proudly claimed to be “39 forever,” and every year, her birthday candles reflected exactly that; a tradition that brought laughter and light to every celebration.Ida is survived by her son, Gustavo Romo, and her granddaughter, Kayla Lilliana Romo.She was preceded in death by her brother, Lester Wold; her mother, Josephine Angelina Lange/ Tomasello; and her father of the Zurawski family.Service details will be shared with family and friends in the coming days. Obituary: Elton Monson
Elton L. Monson, 92, of Morris, passed away peacefully on April 17, 2026, at the Pointe Assisted Living in Morris. He was born on November 2, 1933, in Gardner, Illinois, the youngest son of the late Louis and Hannah (Hill) Monson.Elton is survived by his children, Eric (Susan) Monson and Sharry (Vernon) Leming; his grandchildren, Lexi Monson, Anthonee Monson, Holden Leming, Cullen Leming, and Hattie Monson; and his sister, Mary Shugart.He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Lorraine Welch and Betty Maskel, and his brother, Lyle Monson.Elton attended Morris High School and graduated with the class of 1953. During his high school years, he was proud to be a member of the all-star basketball team, an achievement that reflected both his athletic ability and his competitive spirit.After high school, Elton enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He was stationed in Okinawa during the Korean War, and although he was fortunate never to be called to the front line, his military service had a lasting impact on him. It shaped his deep respect for fellow veterans and inspired a lifetime of support for those who served. He remained an active veteran in both word and deed, always ready to lend a hand, share encouragement, or stand beside another veteran in need.Elton was a devoted member of the Morris VFW and the American Legion, where he gave his time and energy in support of his fellow servicemen and women. Together with his life partner, Kathy, the VAC of Grundy County and Amvets, helping create lasting resources and community support for veterans in the area. His commitment to veterans was not limited to organizations or titles. It was a personal calling that guided much of his life, and he helped countless veterans over the years through his kindness, advocacy, and willingness to serve.In addition to his military and community involvement, Elton worked for many years as a laborer with Laborers Union 75 out of Joliet until his retirement. Even after retirement, he continued to assist and work for the office of the Local Laborers Union, remaining connected to the people and causes that mattered to him.A visitation for Elton will be held on Monday April 27, 2026 from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm at the UC Davis-Callahan Funeral Home in Morris. A celebration of Elton’s life will follow at 12:30 pm, officiated by Funeral Celebrant Carol Walker. Carlin J. McGarvey, born May 28, 2002, passed away on May 13, 2026, leaving behind a life marked by hard work, devotion, and a deep love for his family. He was known by those who loved him as a proud, caring, loving, and compassionate young man whose presence brought warmth and laughter to the lives around him.Carlin was the son of the late Adam McGarvey and Jamie (Ugolini) McGarvey. He is survived by his loving fiancée, Jessa Weygand, and their daughter Stella, along with their future joy, Lennon. He is also survived by his mother, Jamie McGarvey; his brother, Chase McGarvey, and Chase’s wife, Jessika, along with his niece and nephew; his father and mother-in-law, Dave and Lisa Weygand; his maternal grandparents, Joe and Beth Ugolini; and his paternal grandmother, Sharon McGarvey. He was preceded in death by his father, Adam McGarvey; his stepfather, Michael Austino; and his paternal grandfather, Bill McGarvey.Carlin was a hard worker in every sense of the word. For seven years, he worked for Precision Farm Drainage, where he earned a reputation for being dependable, capable, and willing to do whatever the job required. His family and friends knew that he had a natural talent for mechanical work, and he could repair just about any car or truck that needed attention. He had a practical mind, a strong work ethic, and the kind of hands that could turn a problem into a solution. His mother affectionately called him “My Little Pig Pen,” a nickname that reflected both his hardworking nature and the familiar, lived-in spirit that made him so endearing to those who knew him best.Carlin also shared a special bond with his grandfather Joe, whom he helped through many a fall harvest in the fields. Those seasons of work were more than just labor. They were moments that reflected Carlin’s loyalty, his willingness to help, and the quiet strength he brought to the people and places he cared about. He understood the value of showing up, of doing the work, and of being someone others could count on. That reliability was one of his defining qualities, and it touched every part of his life.Above all else, Carlin was devoted to his family. He loved Jessa deeply and was an attentive and devoted fiancée who worked hard to build a life centered on love, stability, and care. He was especially proud of Stella, and he embraced fatherhood with tenderness and commitment. Even through hard times, Carlin remained focused on the people he loved most, and he gave his best to them every day. His love for his family was steady, sincere, and unmistakable.Carlin faced a difficult past, especially after the loss of his stepfather, Mike. That loss shaped him, but it did not define him. Instead, he learned from what he had been through and continued forward with determination and heart. He overcame hardship with resilience and used his experiences to become stronger and more grounded.Those who knew Carlin will remember him as adventurous, selfless, and always willing to help. He was a reliable friend who could be counted on in times of need, and he brought a sense of humor and lightheartedness wherever he went. Wayne K. Spaulding, born on December 14, 1965, passed away on May 17, 2026. He was a son, father, brother, uncle, friend and someone who truly made an impact on the people around him.Wayne attended Morris High School, where he took part in boxing, cross country, and wrestling. After high school, he joined the United States Army, answering the call to serve with honor and commitment.Following his service, Wayne became a proud laborer with Local 75, a role he held with dedication until his recent retirement. He took pride in his work and in being part of an organization that valued hard work and perseverance.Wayne also found joy in the simple and meaningful things in life. He was a devoted Cubs fan and followed the team with loyalty and enthusiasm. He also enjoyed watching the Chicago Bears with his father, Lloyd, a tradition that brought him lasting memories and connection. Wayne was known as a kind man who never knew a stranger, and he had a way of making others feel welcome and respected from the moment they met him.Wayne was preceded in death by his wife, Carrie Taylor-Spaulding, whose memory remained an important part of his story. He is survived by his children, Barbara and Logan, who were a source of pride and love in his life. Grundy County Corn and Soybean Growers will host their annual meeting, Dec. 12, 6:30 p.m. at the Farm Bureau Building in Morris. Guest speaker will be Elizabeth Burns-Thompson, vice president, The Ecosystem Services Market Consortium (ESMC). She will speak to those in attendance about carbon markets. The meeting is open to all farmers.
