Beach Hazards Statement: Dangerous Sneaker Waves Expected on South Central Oregon Coast
A Beach Hazards Statement is in effect for the South Central Oregon Coast, including Douglas, Coos, and Curry counties, due to dangerous sneaker waves expected through October 12 at 2:00 PM PDT. Avoid coastal areas and stay out of the water.
Beachgoers are advised to avoid coastal areas along the South Central Oregon Coast, including Douglas, Coos, and Curry counties, due to a Beach Hazards Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Medford, OR. This statement is effective immediately, October 11, at 12:36 PM PDT, and will remain in effect until October 12 at 2:00 PM PDT.
A moderate risk of sneaker waves is expected. These dangerous waves can run significantly farther up beaches than usual, including over rocks and jetties. Sneaker waves have the potential to suddenly knock individuals off their feet and sweep them into the ocean. Additionally, these waves can move logs and other debris, posing a risk of crushing or trapping anyone caught underneath.
The NWS attributes this hazard to the interaction of short-period north-northwest wind waves with a building west-northwest long-period swell. To ensure safety, residents and visitors are urged to avoid climbing on rocks and jetties, stay away from the ocean, and remain out of the water.
