Sneaker Wave Risk: South Central Oregon Coast Beaches
A Beach Hazards Statement is in effect for the South Central Oregon Coast, including Douglas, Coos, and Curry counties, from Sunday morning through Monday afternoon due to a moderate risk of dangerous sneaker waves.
Beachgoers along the South Central Oregon Coast, including the beaches of Douglas, Coos, and Curry counties, are advised to exercise extreme caution due to a moderate risk of sneaker waves. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Medford, OR, has issued a Beach Hazards Statement effective from Sunday morning, October 9, 2026, through Monday afternoon, October 10, 2026.
Sneaker waves can surge significantly farther up beaches than usual, including over rocks and jetties. This unpredictable wave behavior poses a serious threat, as waves can suddenly dislodge individuals, sweeping them into the ocean. There is also a risk of logs or other debris being moved by these waves, potentially crushing or trapping anyone caught in their path.
The NWS advises the public to avoid climbing on rocks and jetties. For your safety, stay away from the ocean and remain out of the water during this period of hazardous conditions. The hazard area can be viewed in detail at https://www.wrh.noaa.gov/map/?wfo=mfr.
