Mercedes Hernandez, 102, Former Brandon High Teacher Dies

Riverview residents are invited to celebrate the life of Mercedes Hernandez, a former Brandon High School science teacher and community member, who died July 22, 2026. She was 102.

Hernandez, known as “Merci,” will be remembered for her devotion to family, her passion for science and her adventurous spirit. Born Aug. 21, 1924, in Key West, Florida, she carried her Cuban heritage with pride.

Hernandez earned a degree in Chemistry in 1946. She began her career as a chemist in Cuba before moving to Brandon, Florida, in March 1949. She taught science at Brandon High School for 37 years, eventually heading the science department. She inspired countless students.

Hernandez traveled extensively, visiting 154 countries and developing an appreciation for diverse cultures. She spoke four languages fluently and connected with people from all walks of life.

She also wrote poetry throughout her life. At 100, she published a memoir, My 100 Year Journey. Hernandez was a founding member of the Brandon Juniors Women’s Club, established in 1955, and a member of the Brandon Service League.

She created a home centered on love and togetherness, cherishing her family. Her resilience, compassion and generous spirit left a lasting impression.

A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, October 3, 2026, at Nativity Catholic Church. A reception will follow in the Social Hall.
