Starbucks announced plans to close 250 locations across North America, a move that could impact local coffee enthusiasts and employees in Riverview. The company has not yet disclosed which specific stores will close, nor the number of U.S. locations affected by the closures.
Chief Operating Officer Mike Grams informed employees in a letter that the stores slated for closure did not meet acceptable financial results or provide the correct customer experience. This decision comes as Starbucks continues to adjust its retail strategy, which included laying off 300 corporate employees and closing some U.S. offices earlier this year. Last year, the company also closed several underperforming stores, including its Seattle roastery.
For employees impacted by the closures, Starbucks plans to transfer them to other locations if possible. If a transfer is not feasible, affected employees will receive severance packages. This measure aims to mitigate the impact on its workforce as the company streamlines its operations.
Starbucks operates approximately 18,000 locations in North America. While closing 250 stores, the company still anticipates opening about 440 new licensed or company-owned locations. This represents a reduction from its initial plan to open 600 to 650 new stores. The company also expects to complete retrofitting 1,500 shops to enhance their ambiance by the end of this month, aiming for a cozier and more inviting atmosphere for customers.
