RURAL BARNEY, N.D. — A 29-year-old man from Sheldon in Ransom County lost his life in a rollover crash on County Road 3 in Richland County Sunday evening, authorities said.[1][2] North Dakota Highway Patrol Capt. Bryan Niewind reported the Richland County Sheriff’s Office received the call around 9:30 p.m., prompting trooper assistance to the southeast North Dakota scene near the small town of Barney.[2][3]
The victim, whose name has not been released pending family notification, was southbound in a 1974 Chevrolet pickup when it left the roadway, vaulted over an approach and overturned in the ditch, according to troopers.[1][2] He was the sole occupant, wearing a seatbelt, but was partially ejected, suffering fatal injuries at the scene.[1][2] No other vehicles were involved in the incident.[3]
The crash occurred on a rural stretch of County Road 3, a two-lane road cutting through Richland County's farmland south of Fargo and east of the Red River Valley communities like Sheldon and Barney, both with populations under 100.[1] Such single-vehicle rollovers are common in North Dakota's rural areas, where high speeds, icy patches or wildlife can factor in, though weather details were not specified.[3] The investigation continues, with no additional details on cause released Monday.[2]
