CDC: Adult Obesity Prevalence Exceeds 35% in Nearly Half of States

April 23, 2026
Atlanta — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released 2023 population data showing that adult obesity prevalence remains a significant public health concern in the United States. The data reveal that in 23 states, more than 35% of adults are classified as obese.
According to the CDC, prior to 2013, no state recorded an adult obesity prevalence rate at or above 35%. This indicates a substantial increase in obesity rates over the past decade.
The CDC defines obesity using the Body Mass Index (BMI), a measure that compares weight to height. Individuals with a BMI of 30 or higher are generally considered obese.
These figures reflect self-reported data, collected through surveys and health records. The CDC continues to monitor obesity trends and collaborates with state and local health agencies to implement prevention strategies.
