SCSO Participating in Annual Torch Run for Special Olympics

Sarasota County Sheriff's Office Joins Torch Run for Special Olympics

The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) proudly announced its participation in the 2026 Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics, an annual event dedicated to raising awareness and funds for Special Olympics Florida. The run took place on Friday, April 17, 2026, brightening the streets of Sarasota County.

Members of the Sheriff’s Office, alongside Special Olympics athletes, embarked on the run at 8:00 a.m. The route began at Gulf Gate Pavilion and proceeded north along U.S. 41, the iconic Tamiami Trail that connects coastal communities like Venice, concluding at Bay Plaza on Bay Road. Motorists in the area were advised to anticipate potential traffic delays on U.S. 41 between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. on the day of the event, with recommendations to avoid the area or plan for additional travel time.

This inspiring local event is part of a broader statewide initiative. Law enforcement officers across Florida carry the torch through 60 counties, including Sarasota County and its historic city of Venice, covering a total of 1,500 miles. The intrastate torch relay commenced at the end of March and will culminate at the opening ceremony of the Special Olympics Florida State Summer Games, where officers will collectively bring the Flame of Hope into the stadium.

Special Olympics Florida provides individuals with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to participate as respected athletes and productive members of society. Those interested in supporting or volunteering with the Special Olympics can find more information at www.specialolympicsflorida.org.
