Punta Gorda Residents Urged to Review Flood Insurance Policies Ahead of Hurricane Season
PUNTA GORDA – With hurricane season just around the corner, Punta Gorda city officials and local insurance agents are strongly advising residents to review their flood insurance policies. The Atlantic hurricane season officially begins on June 1st, and experts are predicting an active season.
"It's crucial for every homeowner, especially those in our coastal community along Charlotte Harbor, to understand their current flood insurance coverage," stated Martha Jenkins, a long-time insurance agent at Jenkins & Associates in the heart of historic downtown on Taylor Street. "Many policies have a 30-day waiting period before they become effective, so waiting until a storm is named is often too late."
Even properties not located in designated flood zones can experience significant damage from heavy rainfall and storm surge. City Manager Greg Smith emphasized this point during a recent community meeting at the Punta Gorda Civic Association building. "We've seen firsthand how quickly water can rise, even in areas not traditionally considered high-risk," Smith said. "A comprehensive flood insurance policy provides a vital layer of protection that standard homeowner's insurance typically does not cover."
Residents are encouraged to contact their insurance providers or local agents to discuss their coverage options and ensure they are adequately prepared for potential flooding events. Information on flood zones and preparedness resources is also available on the City of Punta Gorda's official website.
