Punta Gorda City Council Approves New Code Enforcement Officer Position
Punta Gorda City Council voted unanimously yesterday, April 15, 2026, to approve the creation of a new Code Enforcement Officer position within the city's Public Works Department. The decision, made during the regular council meeting at City Hall on Nesbit Street in the heart of the historic downtown, aims to enhance the city's ability to address various municipal code violations and maintain community standards.
The new officer will be responsible for investigating complaints, issuing warnings, and enforcing city ordinances related to property maintenance, zoning, and other quality-of-life issues across Punta Gorda neighborhoods, from the tree-lined streets of the historic district to waterfront communities. This addition is expected to improve response times and proactive enforcement efforts, particularly in areas experiencing increased development and resident concerns.
Funding for the new position, including salary and benefits, will come from the city's existing general fund, as outlined in the budget amendment presented by City Manager Greg Murray. The hiring process is anticipated to begin immediately, with the goal of filling the role by early summer.
Residents with questions about code enforcement can contact the Public Works Department at City Hall during regular business hours.
