PALM BEACH – The Palm Beach Town Council unanimously approved a new infrastructure project during its meeting yesterday, April 7, 2026, focusing on enhancing pedestrian safety and accessibility along a key stretch of Ocean Boulevard, the town's iconic oceanfront thoroughfare. The decision greenlights the construction of new sidewalks between Royal Palm Way and Worth Avenue, a long-requested improvement by local residents and businesses in this historic island community.
The project aims to create a continuous, ADA-compliant pedestrian pathway, addressing current gaps and uneven sections that have posed challenges for walkers, joggers, and those using mobility devices. "This is about making our town more walkable and safer for everyone," stated Councilwoman Eleanor Vance during the meeting. "We've heard from many residents about the need for better pedestrian infrastructure in this area, and I'm pleased we can move forward."
Funding for the project, estimated at $1.2 million, will come from the town's capital improvement budget, with a portion potentially offset by state grants for pedestrian safety initiatives. Construction is anticipated to begin in late summer 2026, following a competitive bidding process for contractors. Town Manager Michael Thompson indicated that efforts would be made to minimize disruption to traffic and local businesses during the construction phase.
Residents can expect public notices regarding specific construction timelines and any temporary access changes as the project progresses. Further details will be made available on the Town of Palm Beach website and at future council meetings.
