Mary Bersey: A Life of Service and Community in Venice

Staff Writer
April 9, 2026

Venice bids a fond farewell to Mary Bersey, a beloved and long-standing member of our community, who passed away peacefully last week at her home on Palmetto Drive. Mrs. Bersey, 92, was a familiar face to many, known for her unwavering dedication to local causes and her warm, welcoming spirit.

Born in neighboring Sarasota in 1934, Mary moved to Venice with her family in 1948, just as the city was beginning to truly blossom. She often recounted stories of early Venice, from the bustling activity at the historic Venice Train Depot to the quiet charm of the then-undeveloped Gulf beaches. After graduating from Venice High School in 1952, she dedicated her life to raising her family and, later, to serving the community she cherished.

Mrs. Bersey was a tireless volunteer at the downtown Venice Public Library for over two decades, where she helped organize countless book drives and literacy programs. Her passion for reading and her gentle guidance inspired many young Venetians to discover the joy of books. She was also an active member of the Venice Garden Club, contributing to the beautification of several public spaces, including the planters along West Venice Avenue and the butterfly garden at Centennial Park.

Her commitment extended to the First Presbyterian Church of Venice, where she served on the altar guild and assisted with numerous community outreach initiatives. Friends and neighbors remember her as a kind and generous soul, always ready with a helping hand or a comforting word. "Mary was the heart of our neighborhood," shared longtime friend and fellow Garden Club member, Eleanor Vance, who lives just two blocks from Mrs. Bersey's home. "She made everyone feel like family, and her absence will be deeply felt."

Mary Bersey's legacy is one of quiet strength, steadfast service, and profound love for Venice. She is survived by her two children, four grandchildren, and a community that will forever remember her contributions. A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Venice on Saturday, April 12, at 11:00 AM, followed by a reception in the church hall. All who knew and loved Mary are invited to attend and share their memories.
