John Desmond Appointed to Punta Gorda Historic Preservation Board
John Desmond Joins Punta Gorda Historic Preservation Board
Punta Gorda is welcoming a new face to its Historic Preservation Board. John Desmond, a long-time resident with a keen interest in local history and architecture, was officially appointed to the board during the City Council meeting held yesterday, April 15, 2026, at City Hall on Nesbit Street in the heart of the historic downtown.
Desmond, known for his involvement in several community initiatives, expressed his enthusiasm for the role. "Punta Gorda's unique character is deeply rooted in its historic buildings and neighborhoods," Desmond stated after the appointment. "I look forward to contributing to their preservation and ensuring our city's heritage continues to thrive for future generations."
The Historic Preservation Board plays a crucial role in reviewing proposed changes to historic properties and districts, advising the City Council on preservation matters, and promoting public awareness of Punta Gorda's rich past, including its Victorian-era architecture and maritime legacy along the Peace River. Desmond's appointment fills a vacancy on the seven-member board and is effective immediately. His first official meeting is scheduled for next Tuesday, April 22, at 3:00 PM in the City Hall chambers.
