Denton County Commissioners Court Approves Immediate Burn Ban Due to Drought and Wildfire Risk
Denton County, TX – The Denton County Commissioners Court has approved a burn ban, effective immediately, for all unincorporated areas of Denton County surrounding the city of Denton. The decision, made on July 23, 2024, prohibits all outdoor burning, including recreational fires, due to severe drought conditions and an elevated risk of wildfires.
Violators of the burn ban could face a Class C misdemeanor, which is punishable by a fine of up to $500.
According to the Texas A&M Forest Service, Denton County, with its blend of suburban neighborhoods and expansive rural landscapes, is currently experiencing extreme drought conditions. The Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI) has surpassed 600, indicating a high potential for wildfires in the region.
Denton County Emergency Management Coordinator William Magee urged residents to exercise caution. “We urge all residents to take precautions to prevent fires,” Magee stated. “Please be careful when operating machinery, avoid parking vehicles on dry grass, and properly dispose of cigarettes.”
The burn ban will remain in effect until the Commissioners Court officially rescinds it. Residents are encouraged to sign up for Code Red alerts to receive timely notifications regarding burn bans and other critical community information.
