Denton County Implements Burn Ban Due to Drought Conditions

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 23, 2024 DENTON COUNTY COMMISSIONERS COURT APPROVES BURN BAN EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY DENTON COUNTY, TX – The Denton County Commissioners Court approved a burn ban effective immediately for the entire unincorporated area of Denton County. The burn ban prohibits all outdoor burning, including recreational fires. Violators could face a Class C misdemeanor punishable by a fine up to $500. The burn ban is due to the drought conditions and the increased risk of wildfires. According to the Texas A&M Forest Service, Denton County is currently experiencing extreme drought conditions. The Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI) is currently above 600, which indicates a high potential for wildfires. “We urge all residents to take precautions to prevent fires,” said Denton County Emergency Management Coordinator William Magee. “Please be careful when operating machinery, avoid parking vehicles on dry grass, and properly dispose of cigarettes.” The burn ban will remain in effect until the Commissioners Court rescinds it. Residents can sign up for Code Red alerts to receive notifications about burn bans and other important information.
