Dangerous Lake Michigan Waves Prompt Beach Hazards Statement for Porter County

PORTER COUNTY – Residents and visitors are urged to remain out of Lake Michigan waters due to a Beach Hazards Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Chicago IL. The statement is effective immediately, from September 20 at 9:43 PM CDT, until Monday, September 21 at 7:00 AM CDT.

High wave action and dangerous currents are expected, with waves anticipated to reach 4 to 6 feet. These conditions will make swimming life-threatening, particularly for inexperienced swimmers.

The NWS advises against venturing out onto piers, jetties, breakwalls, or other shoreline structures. These structures can be especially hazardous during high wave events.
