Dangerous Lake Michigan Waves Expected Through Wednesday Afternoon

Lake County, IN residents and visitors are advised to stay out of Lake Michigan waters due to a Beach Hazards Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Chicago IL. The statement is effective immediately, beginning September 20 at 9:43 PM CDT, and remains in effect until Wednesday afternoon, September 23 at 1:00 PM CDT.

High wave action and dangerous currents are expected, with waves forecast to reach 5 to 8 feet. These conditions will create life-threatening swimming hazards, particularly for inexperienced swimmers.

The NWS strongly advises remaining out of the water to avoid these dangerous conditions. Additionally, the public should not venture out onto piers, jetties, breakwalls, or other shoreline structures, as these areas will also be unsafe.
