Day.News reports a Beach Hazards Statement has been issued for Lake Michigan beaches in Lake County, Indiana, warning of life-threatening swimming conditions. The National Weather Service (NWS) Chicago IL issued the statement today, September 20, 2026, at 2:55 PM CDT, effective through Wednesday afternoon.

Residents and visitors are advised to remain out of the water to avoid dangerous currents and high wave action. Waves are expected to reach 5 to 8 feet. The NWS also cautions against venturing out onto piers, jetties, breakwalls, or other shoreline structures.

These conditions pose a severe risk, especially for inexperienced swimmers. The Beach Hazards Statement is expected to expire on September 23, 2026, at 1:00 PM CDT.
